Transformaciones Azarosas

Chance transformations, Contemporary XIII, MALBA Museum
Fragment of the curatorial text, June 2005, by Corinne Sacca Abadi

The artist has made her piece out of ice, recreating a fragment of a territory that refers to the imaginary landscape, pure & untouched & conserves it inside the gallery within an ice-box that acts as its display cabinet. Its lid is open allowing the viewers to walk around the piece & feel the cold air it emits. The water with its strong symbolic connotation of life has been changed into frozen crystal & undergoes transformations depending on the presence or absence of people in the room and of the outside temperature.

Can this piece of art survive? Together with the constant risk of melting, cracks appear in the landscape that enrich the internal vision of the multiple layers sculpted & subtly coloured uncovering an interior at risk. This moving fragility is one of the key points of this piece – “To feel a new beauty in that which is disappearing.” (Walter Benjamin)

Paula Senderowicz’s work manages to preserve the ephemeral nature of this world with the stubbornness of a child-poet that insists in defending a sublime & fleeting moment of happiness. Regaining the sense of existence is written within this gesture of struggle whose effectiveness lies in the romantic conviction of the intent.

The importance given to conservation allows one to relate the role of the Art Gallery with the Ecological debate. The glaciers threatened by the continuing melting are a cause for alarm that questions mankind’s responsibility regarding such processes of change…
